A Psalm For The Wild-Built - Becky Chambers
It seems I'm in the mood for cosy fantasy/SF at the moment.
I tried to read Becky Chambers' A Long Way To A Small Angry Planet last year and really hated it, so I didn't go into this with high expectations. Maybe that helped, because I ended up really enjoying A Psalm For The Wild-Built.
It reminded me of Nghi Vo's Singing Hills Cycle in a lot of ways, and especially of the first book in that series (The Empress Of Salt And Fortune). I'll be interested to see if that comparison holds true for future books in this series, or if Chambers will do something different with Monk & Robot. This was definitely more about the character of Dex than it was about the world and the people in it, which sets it apart from Singing Hills (how much do we actually know about Chih in those books? Not a lot) and I'm keen to spend more time exploring this world and learning more about it.
Definitely a good book for the weird in between space after Christmas but before New Year.
