I Who Have Never Known Men - Jacqueline Harpman
This is a book that's been on my reading list for a while and which I haven't ever made the time for. Now that I have made the time for it I'm glad that I did. I enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, but I'm struggling to find much to say about it.
There are some books that do one thing and do it very well, but the lack of much variety or depth leaves little to discuss afterwards. This feels like one of those books to me. There's certainly much going on here around a philosophical exploration of what it means to be human and what it means to be a woman, but I'm not sure it's saying much that's particularly profound or revelatory.
I enjoyed my time with it but I think this was perhaps a victim of over-hype, as I went into it with very high expectations that weren't quite met.
