Mark Z. Danielewski - Tom's Crossing (DNF)

House Of Leaves is one of my all-time favourite novels. Ergodic fiction in general is something that I love, and HoL has had a huge impact on my own work. But the first time I tried to read it I just couldn't get into it, and I set it aside for years before I finally picked it up and devoured it in a couple of days.

The same thing was true of Danielewski's incomplete work of astonishing scale The Familiar, which I opened and then put down and set on my shelf gathering dust, again for years. And the same is now true of Tom's Crossing.

I can't pin down exactly what's not working for me here, especially as I've only read about 30 pages of this. Maybe it's fatigue from reading so many mammoth tomes in recent weeks with my Wheel Of Time re-read. Maybe it's the fact that the voice here is so cowboy, and I'm just not in the mood for that. I don't know.

I'm sure that at some point - maybe a month from now, or a year, or five years - I'll pick this up again and love it. But for now, I'm moving on.
