Write 1 Sub 1 - WizardPunk
It's a little over a week since I wrote about Write 1 Sub 1 and in that time I've begun work on a number of short stories (and on revising an old novelette that I've been continuously digging out of retirement for the past 15+ years) but haven't managed to get anything to stick. I'm not sure why I'm suddenly feeling intimidated by the blank page, but writing fiction has been eluding me over the past week.
It can't last for much longer, though. About a month ago I responded to a call for pitches to the sequel to Sandy Pug Games' WIZARDPUNK anthology, and what I pitched was a short story. And as of a couple of days ago, my pitch has been accepted. Which means I have to write a short story.
So that's going to be the first piece I write during this W1S1 project. I pitched a grimdark fantasy piece about an apprentice wizard who witnesses the execution of one of her tutors at the hands of the state, which leads her down a road to radicalisation and - eventually - some sort of rebellion. I sat down today intending to draft it but decided I wasn't happy with the shape of the story and so instead spent a few hours outlining a new story that still fits the pitch.
And now I have an outline, and no excuses. So tomorrow I'm going to sit down and bang out a first draft, even if it kills me.
