Writing A Novel - Day 7

Very little to report today. The notecarding process is taking longer than I wanted it to, and I think that’s because I know that I shouldn’t be prioritising it over my deadlines. So my plans to actually start writing today need to be pushed back, but that’s fine. At this stage of pre-production I’m happy as long as I actually touch the project every day, and I’ve managed to notecard about 20 scene ideas. When I clear my slate of work a little I’ll have more capacity to sit down and work on it with a bit more focus.

My quest for a distraction-free writing device hit a snag. The word processor I picked up is working with the exception of the floppy disk drive, which won’t recognise any disks and throws a “NO DISK!!!” error. That obviously makes it functionally useless, since I won’t be able to get any words I wrote on it off the damn thing. Windows 10 also doesn’t seem to want to format a floppy disk despite recognising the USB drive and mounting it to A:, so it seems like this plan might just be a non-starter. At this point a Freewrite Smart Typewriter is looking increasingly tempting - but it will have to remain tempting, because I don’t have $700 to spare.

So, no real progress, but I’m journaling anyway because that’s part of the writing routine. It’s a little frustrating that I set a deadline and immediately had to push it back, because the deadline felt really useful for getting me out of the pre-production phase. But I have to prioritise work that pays the bills, and I have to be okay with making that decision.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to report a little more progress on everything, but we’ll see what happens.
